SLRC Seminar Series: CAPTURING THE ‘VIBE’ IN THE CLASSROOM

Speaker: Ms Stephanie MacMahon

Title: CAPTURING THE ‘VIBE’ IN THE CLASSROOM

Social synchrony, the shared experience of social, emotional and cognitive states which enables the understanding of others, is an innate embodied form of connecting and communicating that has been shown to exist at behavioural, affective, physiological and neurological levels. Through the creation of a sense of affiliation and similarity with others, positive social synchrony increases engagement and pro-social behaviours leading to enhanced social, emotional and cognitive outcomes. Social synchrony can occur spontaneously but can also be engineered. Teachers have an important role to play in understanding how the natural social dynamic processes that exist in the classroom can be utilised to enhance social, emotional and cognitive outcomes. Although there is much research linking engagement and connectedness to outcomes for both learners and teachers, how teachers establish and maintain positive social synchrony in their classrooms, and the extent to which this can be taught to other teachers is not well understood. This mixed methods study uses a science of learning lens to explore how highly effective teachers develop and sustain social synchrony in the classroom and proposes that these strategies can be captured and taught to others to support the engineering of social synchrony across lower secondary classes.
