The first of the 2014 SLRC Melbourne-based Seminars was held last Friday (04 APRIL 2014). Titled “The Visible Classroom” and outlined the project that includes Chief Investigator John Hattie, based in the UK, for using professional captioners to translate teacher talk onto students IPads within 7 seconds of speaking. It also includes students rating their learning, tagging the transcripts and providing learning analytics back to teachers within the hour.
It was wonderful to see such a large audience (50 attendees included colleagues, teachers, DEECD, teacher educators and RHD students), a lively discussion, and the many follow ups. The technology has been successfully used with the Victorian Deaf community, and now being adopted by the Autism Society. We also see close ties to the DEECD “deep pedagogies” project led by DECCD’s Lyn Davie.
The seminar may be repeated within the DEECD so be sure to let us know if you still wish to hear about this exciting SLRC project. Alternatively we will make available to you the slides and the audio recorded of the seminar as well as any supporting documents.
